Online Eco Art Watercolor kit observation

Instructors

Seth Eberle and Bailey Kaul

Introductions (first session-Name, birds you’ve seen recently second session- Name, age, favorite bird)

Kit supplies- bird feeder and seed, bird footage for observation, journal for observation sketches, watercolor palette, pencil, pen

Nature portion- led by Bailey

Art portion- led by Seth

Project is a combination of watercolor and collage based on simple shapes based on Charlie Harper’s style (but different styles are encouraged)

Things not included in kit that they needed- cup of water, paper towel, scissors

Students were free to either follow along or just observe to do the project later

Reminded students that paper has 2 sides for if they wanted to retry

Warm up/ basic watercolor techniques-Wet on wet, wet on dry, getting rid of excess water on the paper with brush

After drying showing the option to draw on details in pen if they would like

Shown panting different color strips (to cut out for the final work) with different colors blended in for those who wanted to experiment with that

Showing mixing colors in the lid of palette

Showing how to get unwanted colors out of a contaminated color within palette

Large sheet of paper for the background environment

The example having snow Seth did the one in the demo with grass to show they could make the environment in whatever season they chose

Expressed the importance of letting the watercolor dry

Throughout the lesson Bailey would interject about bird facts related to what Seth was working on as well as asking Seth questions about what he was doing to prompt him to explain in more depth out loud

The tone for younger age groups is much different from the ones with adults. Instructors try to keep everything focused and there’s more of a focus on educational info about the nature subject

The lessons were a little rushed in these sessions and I think it would have benefitted with more time to allow for drying and working

Seth and Bailey talked to me about how the online eco art programs came about.

It was an experimental program in order to reimagine education with art integration with a hybrid format and take-home projects and kits

February 18 2:30pm-3pm

Another Make and Mingle planning meeting

I had tech problems with iPad and was given extra time to figure out if I could manage to get it working again or if I would need to find another work around

Week 6

February 8th,2021 8:00am-10:00am

I did work on the zine and February 12th, 2:30pm-3:00pm there was an in progress meeting to check in with Bailey and Christa about the zine and how it is coming along they saw my page sketches and went over some extra information that they added to the sheet about what the zine should include

February 13, 1:00pm-4:20pm Online Beginners wood carving observation

Instructor Seth Eberle

The people in this group are more talkative and makes the session feel more relaxed and casual than the kolrosing group who were a little more quiet

-The session started with casual chat and asking everyone their names and experience with carving if they had any to get an idea of the skill range of the group

-went over what was in the kit as well as the materials that would need to be returned and where they could purchase them later if anyone wanted (links were going to be included in follow up email) there was a piece included for practice cuts as well as some extra materials

-Intro to dendrochronology/parts of a tree with visuals (a powerpoint as well as straws held together with a gumband) knowing how a tree can help with carving

-Carving Safety

-Demo for several basic types of carving cuts

After each cut demo time Is given for practicing the cut (instructor verifies that everyone is ready before moving on

Questions between the demos

“how to have more control?”

“Is the wood in the kit from Silverwood?”

“do you cut in the middle of the knife?”

-Breaks at first and second hour mark

-demo for the actual heart carving project

drawing guide lines on the wood

rough “2d”carved out heart from carving out the sides of block

rounding out the heart (given the option to just round out the edges or to make the heart a more rounded “3d” look)

(Seth forgot about recording and was reminded after a couple steps so he started recording and repeated steps for the recording)

some repeated steps for people who asked

After work time and reminding people to stretch and shake out hands

Demo for taking care of carving knife for those who were interested in continuing to carve

Demo of finishing techniques

Paint

Mineral oil/beeswax

Kolrosing

Everyone showed their work to their camera for Seth to take screenshot of the class and their work

After the class Seth and I discussed some of my own thoughts on the class mostly about it being a rather fun and open group and my own experience with carving

We also talked about my own plans for my lesson and the possibility of having a kit available for it

Week 5

Make and Mingle Planning Meeting with Bailey Kaul, Christa Von Wald, and David Donovan

We discussed the Make and Mingle session planned on March 19th the nature element being bird sounds and the art element being flower/leaf pressing, embroidery, and screen printing

There is supposed to be a handout with the kits and they requested that I make a digital interactive zine to go with the kits and me possibly talking about my process of making the Zine at the event itself

The meeting was mostly led by Bailey and discussed the kits that were going to be used and what the event was going to entail as well as what they wanted to be available in the zine to include in the kit. We also discussed a date for the zine to be done and a meeting before that to check in.

First 4 Weeks Summery

The first 2 weeks of my time in my residency with Silverwood Parks mostly consisted of emails and meetings to confirm my availability and possible plans for my lesson plan

In week three we emailed about the February schedule and what I would be interested in observing that month and I observed my first lesson

Kolrosing program with Cora Williams

  • Cora Introduces herself and Silverwood

  • Goes over materials within the kit

  • Brief history of kolrosing

  • Question from the chat (“how is kolrosing different from carving?”)

  • Demo of multiple techniques with both an organic shaped design and a geometric shaped design

  • Listing order of process in the chat after the demo (multiple ways of giving the information for accessibility as well as a follow up email to students with it as well as other resource links)

  • Answered questions in chat and work time for the rest of the time slot

Most of the questions being about what types of things could be used in the process other than cocoa powder or cinnamon, how often might you have to repeat the process to keep the design looking good, and possible methods of preserving the design.

  • Students given the option of whether or not to share their work at the end so students aren't under pressure to share their work if they are uncomfortable

I’ve noticed the online format can be rather uncomfortable and awkward so there is an added challenge of trying to keep the space light and welcoming and keeping the camera in the right position to make what you’re demoing is something to be mindful of with online instruction

In the 4th week I had planned on observing another lesson but didn’t end up receiving the zoom links in order to observe however I was able to get recordings to review when I get the time so as to not miss out on the observation completely and also discussed the schedule for March for possible observations.
